Google said Monday it is working to delete a satellite image from Google Maps that shows the body of a murdered teenager.
Kevin Barrera, 14, was found shot to death on August 15, 2009, near railroad tracks in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Richmond. A satellite photo taken that day shows the teen's body on the ground, a police car, and officers examining the crime scene.
Google said Monday it would replace the image but cautioned it may take several days to do so.
"Our hearts go out to the family of this young boy," Brian McClendon, vice president of Google Maps, said in a statement. "Since the media first contacted us about the image, we've been looking at different technical solutions. Google has never accelerated the replacement of updated satellite imagery from our maps before, but given the circumstances we wanted to make an exception in this case. We believe we can update this in eight days, and we've spoken to the family to let them know we're working hard on the update."
