Tablets and smartphones are far more powerful than they have ever been before with spec sheets that read like they belong on real PCs. Multiple gigs of RAM, multiple core processors and clock speeds above 2GHz really move things along, but Qualcomm is prepared to step it up yet another level.
Following in the success of the current Snapdragon 800 chip, Qualcomm has now formally announced its successor, the Snapdragon 805. This next-generation mobile processor will make use of a Krait 450 quad-core processor wherein each of the cores can get clocked up to 2.5GHz. You also get new Adreno 420 GPU for graphics, allowing for 4K Ultra HD video support.
All said, the Snapdragon 805 will be able to provide 40% better graphics than the current Snapdragon 800. Inside, you’ll find an LTE modem, but 2-stream dual-band Qualcomm VIVA 802.11ac Wi-Fi, the latter of whicih also supports 4K video streaming. Of course, you’ll need a 4K monitor or TV to go along with that.
“We’re delivering the mobile industry’s first truly end-to-end Ultra HD solution,” said Qualcomm executive vice president Murthy Renduchintala, “and coupled with our industry leading Gobi LTE modems and RF transceivers, streaming and watching content at 4K resolution will finally be possible.”
The Snapdragon 805 is already shipping out to manufacturers for sampling and testing. The first devices to use the chip should arrive in the first half of next year.
