Facebook and twitter are both widely regarded as very important websites, and not at all time-wasting dumping grounds for cat and baby pictures. Perhaps feeling that twitter was stealing some of their real-time coverage mojo, Facebook recently announced that they re-tooled the newsfeed feature to promote more actual news. Now, they’re upping the ante with their acquisition of SportStream, a startup company whose app promises up to the minute coverage of sporting events.
According to their website, “SportStream is built in San Francisco, by a group of die-hard sports fans dedicated to combining their love of sports and technology. The company’s patent-pending technology surfaces the highest quality tweets, Facebook posts, Instagram media, stats, news and more for every league, game, team and player across sports.”
Facebook has yet to comment on the acquisition on their press website. However, according to a press release on the SportStream website, “Facebook sees the value in our technologies and team, and we’re excited to be a part of their continued investment in their platform. With this next step for SportStream, we’ll have greater resources to continue to do what we do best.”
The company, founded in 2012 by entrepreneur Paul Allen, aggregates social chatter and updates in a personalized social feed for sports fans. The website states that with the acquisition, they intend to scale and further develop tools and capabilities.
