According to the screenshots, both GPUs will be using the upcoming GM107 GPU core, which is expected to be based off the Maxwell architecture (hence the M in the GM107). Previously it was thought that Nvidia could be moving to the 20nm process with the GTX 750/GTX 750 Ti first since it would be easier to do so with a smaller die, but according to the leaked screenshots it seems like Nvidia may be sticking with the 28nm architecture at least for the time being.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">As far as specs go, the GeForce GTX 750 will be rocking 768 CUDA cores, 64 TMUs, and 16 ROPs paired with 1GB of GDDR5 on a 128-bit memory interface. The bigger brother, the GeForce GTX 750 Ti on the other hand will be rocking 960 CUDA cores, 80 TMUs, and 16 ROPs paired with 2GB of GDDR5 on a 128-bit memory interface. Looking at these specs we’re definitely dealing with low/mid-range hardware here especially with the 128-bit memory interface really keeping performance limited.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">Additionally, both GPUs will not use any sort of external PCIe power so it’ll be bus powered only. Given that the PCIe bus is only rated for a maximum of 75w, the upcoming GPUs will practically be sipping power. The GeForce GTX 750 scored 5250 points in 3D Mark 11 using the performance preset and the GeForce GTX 750 Ti scored 5963 points using the performance preset. That said, both these cards are overclocked from the factory and they’re using pre-release drivers so it’s difficult to say what actual performance is going to look like once the cards actually ship. These are decent numbers for a PCIe bus only powered GPU, but they’re not enthusiast class parts that’s for sure.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">Currently the rumored release dates for these cards is the 18th of this month and prices are currently unknown at this time. Given that it appears that the cards leaked were factory overclocked, it’s likely that Nvidia partners will have custom GTX 750′s and GTX 750 Ti’s available out of the gate. The GameWorks program offers access to Nvidia’s CUDA development tools, GPU profiling software, and other developer resources. One of the features of GameWorks is a set of optimized libraries that developers can use to implement certain effects in game. Unfortunately, these same libraries also tilt the performance landscape in Nvidia’s favor in a way that neither developers nor AMD can prevent.</div> <h3> Understanding libraries</h3> <div style="margin-bottom: 24px;"> Simply put, a library is a collection of implemented behaviors. They are not application specific — libraries are designed to be called by multiple programs in order to simplify development. Instead of implementing a GPU feature five times in five different games, you can just point the same five titles at one library. Game engines like Unreal Engine 3 are typically capable of integrating with third party libraries to ensure maximum compatibility and flexibility. Nvidia’s GameWorks contains libraries that tell the GPU how to render shadows, implement ambient occlusion, or illuminate objects.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 24px;"> <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/GameWorks.jpg" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;"><img alt="Gameworks presentation" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-173289" height="357" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/GameWorks.jpg" style="border-style: none;" width="639" /></a></div> <div style="margin-bottom: 24px;"> In Nvidia’s GameWorks program, though, all the libraries are closed. You can see the files in games like <em>Arkham City</em> or <em>Assassin’s Creed IV</em> — the file names start with the GFSDK prefix. However, developers can’t see <em>into</em> those libraries to analyze or optimize the shader code. Since developers can’t see into the libraries, AMD can’t see into them either — and that makes it nearly impossible to optimize driver code.</div> <h3> Is GameWorks distorting problems in today’s shipping games?</h3> <div style="margin-bottom: 24px;"> To answer this question, I’ve spent several weeks testing <em>Arkham Origins</em>, <em>Assassin’s Creed IV</em>, and <em>Splinter Cell: Blacklist</em>. The last is not a formal GameWorks title, but Nvidia worked with Ubisoft to implement the game’s ambient occlusion, and early benchmarks showed a distinct advantage for Nvidia hardware when running in that mode. Later driver updates and a massive set of game patches appear to have resolved these issues; the R9 290X is about 16% faster than the GTX 770 at Ultra detail with FXAA enabled. <em>Assassin’s Creed IV</em> is more difficult to test — it’s engine is hard-locked to 63 FPS — but it showed the R9 290X as being 22% faster than the GTX 770 as well, roughly on par with expectations.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 24px;"> <em>Arkham Origins’</em> performance is substantially different.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 24px;"> Like its predecessor, <em><a href="http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/106635-holy-headache-batman" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">Arkham City</a></em>, it takes place in an open-world version of Gotham, is built on the Unreal 3 engine, and uses DirectX 11. Both games are <a href="http://www.nvidia.com/object/nv_gdc2k2_02.html" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">TWIMTBP</a> titles. I’ve played both games all the way through — many of the animations, attacks, and visual effects of <em>Arkham City</em> carry over to <em>Arkham Origins</em>. In <em>Arkham City</em>, the R9 290X has a 24% advantage over the GTX 770 in DX11, and a 14% improvement in DX9. In<em>Arkham Origins</em>, they tie. Can this be traced directly back to GameWorks? Technically, no it can’t — all of our feature-specific tests showed the GTX 770 and the R9 290X taking near-identical performance hits with GameWorks features set to various detail levels. If DX11 Enhanced Ambient Occlusion costs the GTX 770 10% of its performance, it cost the R9 290X 10% of its performance.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 24px;"> The problem with that “no,” though, is twofold. First, because AMD can’t examine or optimize the shader code, there’s no way of knowing what performance <em>could</em> look like. In a situation where neither the developer nor AMD ever has access to the shader code to start with, this is a valid point. If so, you'll be glad to hear that NVIDIA is showing its support for the new 7-inch slate this holiday season by pushing out a beefy software update.</span></div> <div style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 18px;"> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Announced today on <a href="http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2013/12/26/tegra-note-7-ota/" target="_blank">NVIDIA's official blog</a>, the new update bumps the Tegra Note 7 up to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and includes a number of other improvements. That includes support for left-handed users and better overall response when it comes to using the device's stylus, an alert when the stylus is removed or inserted and the ability to capture the notification bar with full-screen capture.</span></div> <div style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 18px;"> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The Tegra Note 7's camera is also getting some attention in this latest update. NVIDIA says that it's included an always-on high-dynamic range feature that ought to produce better-looking images across a range of lighting conditions. Rounding out the list of improvements packed into this bundle of update-y goodness is video stabilization, the ability to transfer app and data files from the Tegra Note 7's internal storage to an external SD card and some unspecified security and bug fixes.</span></div> <div style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 18px;"> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Overall this looks to be a pretty feature-packed update, and it's good to see the Tegra Note 7 getting love from NVIDIA just a little over a month after its debut. The K20X chip was used in the U.S. Department of Energy's Titan supercomputer, which delivered 17.59 petaflops of performance and was the world's fastest supercomputer until June this year, when it was eclipsed by China's Tianhe-2, which has Intel's Xeon E5 chips and Xeon Phi accelerators, and delivers 33.86 petaflops of performance.</span></div><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.7em; margin-bottom: 0.7em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Tesla chips are also used in some workstations, but are not targeted at PCs.
