Like those flowers, much of what's contained in the February update is under the surface: Kinect voice recognition improvement, tools for developers and "stability and product updates to improve the customer experience" to name a few non-specific bulletpoints. What you'll actually care about is the stuff you'll see, which in this case is a battery meter for gamepads (visible on the dashboard) and a reorganized My Games & Apps section.</span><br style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;" /><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">That first component is self-explanatory, but the latter piece requires some detail. First, you can actually see how much space you've got left on that 500GB HDD -- helpful! Second, the applications are being broken out from games, and can be more incrementally managed. "Now you can pick the order in which you want your content to load and we've added a boot progress indicator so you can better track updates while they load," Xbox Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten says in a blog post detailing the update. Additionally, February's update adds USB keyboard support. Sure, why not? There should also be some other bells and whistles in there, which Microsoft says we'll find out more about soon (er, uh, </span><em style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">before next Tuesday</em><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">).</span><br style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;" /><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">Head below for more on the second half of the update, due in March.</span><br style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;" /><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">The second piece of seasonal update arrives on March 4th, and it's got a fully revamped party system just in time for the launch of blockbuster game </span><em style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">Titanfall</em><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"> (a multiplayer-focused experience). What exactly does that mean? We'll have to wait to find out, as Whitten's only offering "a new party and multiplayer system" as detail. And what of promised Twitch.tv streaming ahead of E3 this year? Microsoft's staying mum for now, but we'd be shocked if it didn't show up in the first major system update to Xbox One.</span><br style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;" /><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">Regardless of the spring update, small and continuous updates to the Xbox One will still occur as time goes on. <span style="background-color: white;">HTC sells several versions of the HTC One, but they are nearly identical on the inside. What sets each one apart is the software it runs. There are carrier-locked phones that you might buy on-contract from the likes of AT&T or Verizon, unlocked or developer edition phones, and the Google Play Edition <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/htc" style="text-decoration: none;">HTC</a> One. The OS update for each variant takes a different winding road through the testing labs and carrier bureaucracy.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">The handy <a href="http://www.htc.com/assets-desktop/images/softwareupdates/HTC-Anatomy-of-an-Android.jpg" style="text-decoration: none;">graphic created by HTC</a> is thousands of pixels tall, which really serves to indicate how complex the process can be. All three categories of devices start out the same, with Google delivering the Platform Developers Kit (PDK). The PDK consists of tools and code to assist in building Android updates before the new version has been officially announced. The three phones stay in sync as chipset makers like Qualcomm update their drivers and HTC plans its development process.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white;">HTC does internal lab testing on the updates for all three phones, but the carriers do additional testing on their devices. If bugs are found, the update will be tweaked and tested again before any wireless tweaks are recertified by regulators. When everything looks good, the update is ready for final approval, called Technical Acceptance. The locked versions have to go through Technical Acceptance from the carrier <i>and </i>Google, but the unlocked and GPE phones just go through Google. The last step is sending over-the-air updates out to customers, which is handled by HTC, the carrier, or Google, depending on the version.vThings start to diverge when HTC begins integrating its custom services. The carrier and unlocked HTC One get the Sense interface and features, but the <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/mobile/157389-google-edition-phones-could-jumpstart-an-android-rom-renaissance" style="text-decoration: none;">Google Play Edition</a> phone (which runs stock Android) bypasses this step. Next, the carrier-locked phones have to be customized for each wireless company. This is when the infamous carrier bloatware and services are added, but again, the GPE device sails on by, this time joined by the unlocked HTC One.</span></div>

This is built-in by Shazam so that the feature won't drain users' iPhone battery. Shazam recommends using the feature at bars and coffee shops where music constantly plays and also while watching TV.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">For those concerned about privacy, Shazam assures users that they  have nothing to worry about. The app doesn't record audio, it creates digital fingerprints that are sent back to Shazam's servers and matched with fingerprints that are stored there. Those digital fingerprints cannot be converted back into audio, so even though the Shazam iPhone app is always listening and tagging, it is never recording.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Those digital fingerprints also ensure that the app won't run up users' data use. Rather than matching large recorded audio files, which would take up multiple megabytes of data, Shazam's digital fingerprints use less data than the size of an average email, the company said.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Auto Shazam has been available for the iPad for several months now, but this is the first time the company brings the feature to a smartphone. Shazam said it would like to bring the feature to Android, but the company said the Google mobile platform has limitations when it comes to the microphone.</span><br />

WinBeta.org reported word of the troublesome firmware update for Microsoft's second-generation Intel-based Surface on December 18. Some users also have been reporting that they were unable to install the update that seemingly was at fault, though that may have been due to a false error message, WinBeta noted.</div>

As I noted last week, I've heard from some Surface Pro users that they've been having problems with spontaneous reboots after upgrading to Windows 8.1. There are a couple of threads on Microsoft's Answers site about this. This seems to be a separate issue that predating the December firmware updates and were focused on the first-generation Surface Pro. I still have not received any information about what Microsoft is advising users with this issue, but will keep asking.</div>

I've also seen some users reporting that their ARM-based Surface RT and Surface 2 devices have been sporadically requesting their the Bitlocker Recovery key at boot after they applied recent firmware updates. I also haven't seen any acknowledgement by Microsoft of this issue or suggestions as to what users should do to attempt to circumvent it. I've got a question in to Microsoft on this one, as well. Some of my Microsoft sources have said there is a fix in the works for this one, but no word as to when it will be pushed out.</div>

In the meantime, in case you haven't seen TechRadar's recent list of 15 fixes for Windows 8.1 "annoyances," it might be worth a look. The first fix is for those who've had problems with SkyDrive syncing since Microsoft integrated SkyDrive into Windows 8.1 -- something I've heard a number of folks have mentioned as having run into with their Surfaces and other Windows 8.1 PCs and devices.</div>

Sure enough, a user on <em>XDA Developers</em> has now reported that he's received the update the safe way, over-the-air. That means you'll soon be able to bellow <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/31/android-kitkat-nexus-5-google-now-search/" style="color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none;">"OK, Google!"</a> if you're rocking the Sense-less device, though some waiting may be in order if the rollout is staggered. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/31/android-4-4-kitkat-launch/" style="color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none;">Other benefits</a> you'll notice will be a streamlined interface, better camera app with its own shortcut, improved battery life and more speed overall. Given that there are probably a few people who will run into the same issue, we wanted to quickly go over what some device owners can expect <strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">not to see</strong> when updating their devices to Kit Kat.</span></div><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 27px; margin-bottom: 28px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span id="more-125209" style="box-sizing: border-box;"></span></span></div><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 27px; margin-bottom: 28px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Google has already stated that one of the features (the Experience launcher) found on the Nexus 5 is purely a device exclusive, but as other devices – such as the Moto X – are receiving Kit Kat, more feature dismissals are being noticed.</span></div><h4 style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.2; margin: 0px 0px 14px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Google Experience Launcher</span></h4><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 27px; margin-bottom: 28px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Shortly after the launch of Kit Kat, Google announced that the Google Experience Launcher found on the Nexus 5 <a href="http://www.droid-life.com/2013/11/06/google-experience-launcher-found-on-the-nexus-5-is-an-exclusive/" style="box-sizing: border-box;">would be a device exclusive</a>. What that means is that no other device will have the same exact experience as N5 owners, such as the <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">swipe left</em> for Google Now, “Ok Google” voice command from the homescreen, new UI for editing your homescreens, the fullscreen wallpaper chooser UI, separate section for widgets, and other misc. tweaks.</span></div><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 27px; margin-bottom: 28px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If you install Android 4.4 on a Moto X, Nexus 4 or Nexus 7, you can expect to see essentially the same launcher that comes with Jelly Bean. Your widgets are accessed through the app drawer, you will long press a homescreen to access your wallpaper choose, etc.</span></div><h4 style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.2; margin: 0px 0px 14px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Translucent Nav Bar and Notification Bar</span></h4><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 27px; margin-bottom: 28px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Google decided for whatever reason that Nexus tablets and the Nexus 4 running Android 4.4 will not have translucent navigation and notification bars. Why this decision was made, we don’t know right off. Although, if you install the update on a phone such as Moto X, the translucent bars are enabled. When making a call on a Nexus 5, you can perform a search for a local business right through the dialer and then place a call. In addition, the device will then save that number so in case they call back, it wont be from a random number; it will display the business’ name on the Caller ID. It’s a fancy feature, and it’s possible that a future update could enable it, but don’t expect to see it if you update your Moto X.</span></div><h4 style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.2; margin: 0px 0px 14px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Tap & Pay Settings</span></h4><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 27px; margin-bottom: 28px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Almost all installers of Kit Kat will have access to a new Tap & Pay settings menu on their devices. If you do not see it under your Settings, you will only need to make sure you are running the latest version of Google Wallet and have NFC enabled under settings. </span></div><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 27px; margin-bottom: 28px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Tap & Pay setting allows users to dictate which NFC-powered payment system they want to use.
