A built-in decoder allows the display of 4k content from external devices connected via HDMI, USB or LAN ports. So it’s the same resolution as the Nexus 7 2013, but a little larger. For some people, the Nexus 7 is simply too small to be the ideal tablet. All things considered, an 8-9 inch tablet is a really great size. This way Google can cater to those people with stock Android and not have to develop new hardware for the Nexus program.Google has been rapidly expanding the selection of Android devices it sells in the Play Store this year, and one of the recent additions might seem odd at first glance. The Google Play Edition LG G Pad 8.3 is only a little larger than the 2013 Nexus 7, but it starts at $350. However it fills a niche, and <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/google" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">Google</a> is all about niches these days.</div> <div style="color: #333333; font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;"> The rest of the hardware is similarly impressive. The G Pad has a quad-core <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/Qualcomm" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">Qualcomm</a>Snapdragon 600 at 1.7GHz per core, 2GB of RAM, and a 4600mAh battery. The battery is quite a bit larger than the Nexus 7′s 3950mAh unit, which is a happy side effect of the larger chassis size. It’s only slightly heavier than the Nexus 7, though. It had very good hardware, but the software was a bit of a mess. By keeping LG from poking around too much with the UI and features of the software, the Google Play Edition tablet could rectify the one major problem facing the device. This tablet runs <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/android" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">Android</a> 4.4 KitKat, and should stay up to date much better than other devices.</div> <div style="color: #333333; font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;"> In the past, when Google talked about Android, it was talking about a version of the platform that almost no one would ever see. OEMs skin and modify devices along with their carrier partners, which weakens Google’s control over Android. A Google Play phone or tablet provides a stock Android experience that is heavily influenced by Google. While the OEM still builds the update, there is virtually no change to the code beyond optimization for the hardware, and certainly no carrier bloatware. LG’s all-in-one Chromebase will bring Chrome OS, unfortunately, to the desktop

Well, technically it’s an all-in-one PC, but given Chrome OS’s minimal feature set, it is essentially a kiosk. Called the Chromebase, there’s no word on pricing or availability yet, but given its chunky appearance and circa-2005 rounded bezels we’re probably looking at somewhere in the region of $300 to $400.</div> <div style="color: #333333; font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;"> LG’s Chromebase, which will be shown off at CES 2014, is an all-in-one (AIO) with a 21.5-inch 1920×1080 IPS display, Intel Celeron CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of solid-state storage. A fairly wimpy spec, but it sits firmly within Chrome OS’s minimum hardware requirements. The paltry supply of RAM may be an issue if you like to keep more than a few tabs open, but LG will probably offer a 4GB model for an extra $50 if you think you’ll need it. With a Celeron CPU, the Chromebase won’t exactly blitz through page loads, and you can expect a fair bit of slowdown if you try to do more than one non-basic tasks at the same time.</div> <div style="color: #333333; font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;"> LG envisions the Chromebase as a secure kiosk-style computer for schools, hotels, call centers, and other settings that don’t require the feature set provided by a full Windows PC. Chrome OS is very secure, and cloud-based profiles — all of your bookmarks, add-ons, and apps are automatically synced when you log in – make it ideal for situations where dozens or hundreds of people might use the same computer. The Chromebase might also make sense as a family computer, though given the wimpy processor and lack of apps and games, your kids probably wouldn’t be too happy to receive a Chromebase for Christmas.</div> <div style="color: #333333; font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;"> <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/chromebase-lg-back.jpg" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;"><img alt="LG Chromebase, back" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-173077" height="632" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/chromebase-lg-back-640x632.jpg" style="border-style: none;" width="640" /></a></div> <div style="color: #333333; font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;"> There are some other important questions about the Chromebase’s hardware spec, too. The LG press release doesn’t mention if the display is a touchscreen or not — a significant point, if the Chromebase is destined for kiosk use. Chrome OS has received a few touchscreen tweaks over the last year, which I assumed were for touchscreen Chromebooks — or perhaps, at long last, a Chrome OS <em>tablet</em> — but maybe they were in preparation for the Chromebase. The Chromebase will come with a mouse and keyboard, 2x USB 2.0 sockets, a single USB 3.0 socket, and an RJ45 LAN socket (probably Gigabit).</div> <div style="color: #333333; font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Curiously, the Chromebase has an HDMI input socket, meaning you can use it as a standalone screen — say, as a second display for your Windows PC, perhaps. It’s hard to come up with a valid usage scenario for such a setup, though. Maybe you use Chrome OS when you just want to bring up a website quickly, but boot your real PC when you want to do some gaming or Photoshop work? Given how quickly Windows 8 and OS X come out of standby, though, such a scenario seems tenuous at best. Still, having an HDMI input is better than not having an HDMI input. (See: HP Chromebook 11: Finally, a Chrome OS laptop with the right specs at the right price.)</div> <div style="color: #333333; font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;"> The fact remains that <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/chrome-os" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">Chrome OS</a> occupies a weird mid-ground between fully-fledged mobile OS like Android, and a desktop OS like Windows. Chrome OS, which was initially conceived by <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/google" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">Google</a> as a mobile, browser-based, always-connected-to-the-cloud operating system, always seemed a bit ahead of its time. Browsers still don’t have native-level performance (and they churn through battery life), and mobile connectivity is still nowhere near good enough or cheap enough. The idea of a curved device is enough to pique anyone's interest, but there's one thing holding it back from mainstream acceptance: the price. Retailing for the US equivalent of $940, this unique handset isn't for the budget-conscious, and it isn't going to make your every dream come true either. To most potential buyers, the return on investment is pretty low; it's high-end, sure, but is it worth paying a $200 or $300 premium just for the shape? If that's the case, we're witnessing the beginning of something big. Perhaps it's appropriate, then, that LG's inaugural device is... well, big? At 160.5 x 81.6 x 8.7mm, the G Flex, which features a 6-inch display, could be considered large even compared to the<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/09/lg-g2-review/" style="text-decoration: none;">LG G2</a> or the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/30/samsung-galaxy-note-3-review/" style="text-decoration: none;">Samsung Galaxy Note 3</a>. Still, it's actually a tad smaller than most other 6-inch handsets. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/18/nokia-lumia-1520-review/" style="text-decoration: none;">Lumia 1520</a> is just as thick as the Flex, but quite a bit taller and wider; even the 5.9-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/15/htc-one-max-review/" style="text-decoration: none;">HTC One Max</a> is taller and wider (and a great deal thicker). Both devices are also more than an ounce heavier than the 6.24-ounce Flex, making LG's handset feel comfortable by comparison. The sides are flat near the top, providing a place to rest your fingertips. Of course, they do curve inward toward the bottom.</span></div><div style="font-size: 17px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That said, curves can bring a phone's ergonomics to another level. The Samsung Galaxy Round, which arcs from left to right, was much more comfortable than the Note 3 because its curves allow the phone to rest naturally in the hand. Since the G Flex arcs from <a href="http://youtu.be/j5C6X9vOEkU" style="text-decoration: none;">top to bottom</a>, however, it feels a little more awkward than it would if the phone were simply flat; my index finger frequently slips off the edge because the phone curves up and makes the sides harder to reach.</span></div><div style="font-size: 17px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The glossy back cover comes with a brushed-metal look and is a little slippery, but as odd as it sounds, we don't mind it so much on the G Flex (more on that in a moment). It's also a huge dust magnet: It was nearly impossible to completely clean the phone, no matter how hard we tried. The G Flex uses the same rear buttons as we've seen on the G2 near the top, but this time the power button doubles as an LED notification light. Just above that, you'll find the 13-megapixel camera with flash on one side and infrared on the other. The buttons and camera rest on a small hump that rises just above the rest of the chassis.</span></span></div><div style="font-size: 17px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The G Flex is currently available in Korea, but will soon be on sale in Hong Kong, Singapore and Europe. We're still awaiting word on whether it will get picked up by a US carrier, but for now, LG's keeping quiet about its plans. The company provided us with a Korean review unit, which comes with quad-band GSM/EDGE, CDMA (800/1900), tri-band HSPA+ 42 Mbps (850/1900/2100) and dual-band LTE-Advanced (850/1800). We weren't able to test the phone on LTE, but we had no problem connecting to AT&T's HSPA+ network. You'll also get dual-band WiFi with 802.11ac support, USB On-The-Go, DLNA and Bluetooth 4.0+LE.</span></span></div><div style="font-size: 17px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In real-life use, we were satisfied with LG's claims. We did plenty of pushing and pulling on the device to test its physical limits, and none of our efforts resulted in cracking or any kind of damage to the chassis. Pushing down on the back immediately made us think of a large spring that offers only a little bit of give under enough pressure. Unless you've been doing a lot of finger push-ups lately, we don't think the flex feature is something you can take advantage of unless you go out of your way to do so; if you want to really flatten the device, you'll need to apply pressure with the palm of your hand, or pull on the edges of the phone like you're tearing a piece of stale bread.</span></span></div><div style="font-size: 17px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Before we discuss how the display looks, let's address another common question: Does the G Flex actually have a flexible display, or is it just curved? We're happy to report that it's not only flexible, but it's also much more so than we would've expected. Of course, this isn't so obvious when it's bonded to the G Flex's chassis, but we had the opportunity to handle one of the phone's displays when it wasn't attached to the rest of the body, and it's surprisingly similar to a plastic playing card. It's bendable in both directions and can even bend around my thumb -- LG said that it could tolerate up to a radius of 400mm</span></span></div><div style="font-size: 17px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The lower resolution is clearly noticeable on the G Flex; text, graphics and videos just don't have the same kind of clarity that we've grown used to. However, there are quite a few positives that help make up for this shortcoming. The best part of the curved screen is its superb viewing angles, but in all fairness, we were highly impressed by the panel's viewing angles even when it was lying flat, so the curves simply enhance it.
